چکیده

This paper contributes to the recent investigations of speechaccompanying gestures under a formal semantic view. We show that gestures can serve to disambiguate a sentence with respect to its possible focus domains. We provide a statistical evaluation of data gained from a corpus annotated with gestures and information structure. The language under investigation is German. We argue that a sentence that, in isolation, is ambiguous concerning the extension of its focus domain is disambiguated via speech-accompanying gestures. Gesture thus is a means to mark information structure next to intonation and word order.

Evaluation of Continuous Marking Menus for Learning Cursive Pen-based Commands

We present here the Continuous Marking Menus, which help users learning a set of handwritten commands on a pen-based interface. The aim of this paper is to experimentally attest the interest of this new type of menu by evaluating its ability to help the learning of a set of gestures. We describe an experimental comparison on the task of learning a set of gestures with or without the help of Con...

Articulatory gestures and focus marking in German

This study reports on a production experiment investigating tonal and articulatory means of encoding different focus structures in German. Using an electromagnetic articulograph, we examined the movements of the upper and lower lips (related to sonority expansion) during the production of target words occurring in four different focus conditions. We found systematic differences not only between...

Using glyphs to facilitate transition from hierarchical selection to gesturing

The successive strokes made in multi-stroke marking menus form gestures. This paper reports on an experimental study that examines how the use of glyphs affects performance in marking menu selection. Glyph familiarity is manipulated by comparing Chinese style and Mark style glyphs across Chinese and non-Chinese users. Performance benefits are found for familiar and memorable glyphs. The results...

HPSG Approach to Synchronous Speech and Deixis

The use of hand gestures to point at objects and individuals, or to navigate through landmarks on a virtually created map is ubiquitous in faceto-face conversation. We take this observation as a starting point, and we demonstrate that deictic gestures can be analysed on a par with speech by using standard methods from constraint-based grammars such as HPSG. In particular, we use the form of the...
